Last Week in Danville, Aug. 15 to 21

A look back at some of the happenings in town over the last week and a brief preview of what's to come.

It was a sad start off to the week in Danville, when late Sunday night on Aug. 15, when he fell from a moving SUV on Del Amigo and Glenn Roads. Friends remembered De Young for his great heart and the community was saddened by De Young's tragic death. A memorial service was held for De Young on Friday.

In elections, the town council voted Monday to cancel the Nov. 2 town council election. With just two incumbents, Vice Mayor Karen Stepper and Towncouncilman Robert Storer, running for the two open council seats, the council appointed the new members to next year's council, saving some $50,000 in election costs. Stepper and Storer wrote a letter to the editor to let residents know their goals for the town.

In schools, STAR testing results from the last school year showed that San Ramon Valley kids are performing well above the state average on standardized tests with average mean scores between 30 and 60 points above the state average in almost all subjects and in all grades.

In court news, the preliminary hearing for Danville ex-Cub scout leader Michael Vawter, who is accused of having child pornography on his computer at his previous employer in San Ramon, was delayed at the Walnut Creek courthouse. Vawter is scheduled to appear in court in early Sept.

A 23-year-old San Ramon man, Cainan Schierholtz, who is being held at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond in connection with a string of crashes on Danville Boulevard and Railroad Avenue earlier this month, plead not guilty to felony DUI charges, and is scheduled to appear in court in early September.

In business, the popular British grocer, Fresh & Easy announced it will be opening a store in the spot on Diablo Road vacated by Albertson's in 2006. The opening, slated for next year, is part of seven planned store openings, including one in Walnut Creek.

In sports, it was a quiet week but , has lots of great stories lined up for next week to preview the exciting fall sports seasons at San Ramon Valley and Monte Vista High Schools.

The first day of school in the San Ramon Valley Unified School district is Monday and we'll have a look at enrollment numbers as compared to the last school year.

The town council will discuss plans for the much anticipated Danville Hotel project at a joint meeting with the Planning Commission, Heritage Resource commission and Design Review Board on Tuesday night at the town meeting hall at 7:30 p.m. We'll be there to let you know where that project stands, with a report Wednesday morning.
