Monte Vista's series with Granada dates back to 1972 when the Mustangs squeaked by with a 3-0 win, leading to today's all-time record of 25 wins and eight losses for the Mustangs. Â
The 1998 game was memorable. In year two of the coach Craig Bergman era, the Mustangs rolled through their first four opponents, but when facing the Matadors on the Danville turf, the Mustangs seemed to be looking ahead and fell behind 20-0, setting the stage for one of the greatest comebacks in school history. Bruce Giron took the second half kickoff, broke three tackles and returned it 89 yards for a touchdown, setting the stage for the rally.  T.J. Marston and Mike O'Hare caught 50-plus yard touchdown passes from Mike Montemayor, but it wasn't over until O'Hare ran a final score into the end zone with 17 seconds to play. Â
That Monte Vista team was later devastated by injuries, and finished on the outside looking in at the NCS playoffs despite allowing opponents only 12 points per game, the lowest total of the Bergman era.
