The Star: Serra running back Erich Wilson carried the ball an impressive 30 times for 148 yards, and his one touchdown gave the Padres the 28-21 lead early in the fourth quarter.

The Turning Point: After tying the score at 21 near the end of the fourth quarter, Serra recovered the ensuing on-side kick to get the ball back, and control the momentum.  Nine plays later they took the lead for good, 28-21.

Bottom Line: Serra used a patient ball-control offense to limit Monte Vista's offensive firepower, and Wilson and quarterback Andy McAindon provided enough offense to secure the win.

After a disappointing 42-7 loss last week to De La Salle, the Serra High game-plan against Monte Vista called for long offensive drives that controlled the clock, and kept the Mustangs' high-powered offense on the sidelines. The plan worked to perfection in the second half, as Serra held Monte Vista to only four offense plays in the fourth quarter of a hard-fought win Friday night in Danville.

"They did a nice job of keeping us off the field," Monte Vista head coach Craig Bergman said. "But we had our chances."

After a slow start, the Monte Vista offense sprung to life trailing 7-0 midway through the second quarter.

Making his first varsity start, Monte Vista quarterback Jeff Lockie highlighted an impressive 14-play drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dane Turner. The 6-foot-2 junior connected on 6-of-7 passes on the drive including a key third-down completion to standout Bryce McGovern.

After another Serra score, Lockie and the offense were at it again early in the second quarter, as the Mustangs went on a 78-yard drive, capped by Lockie's 9-yard touchdown scramble to tie the score, 14-14.

Senior running back Michael Sullas (21 carries, 102 yards) kept the drive alive with a three-yard run on fourth-and-short, setting up Lockie's touchdown.

"(Lockie) did well," Bergman said of his quarterback's varsity debut. "He made one mistake on the interception (in the first quarter), but he made some good decisions, and did a nice job of leading us."

Monte Vista took a 21-14 midway through the third quarter on a perfectly thrown two-yard touchdown pass from Lockie to McGovern, and appeared ready to take the game over.

That's when Serra's offensive ground game went to work.

After a one-yard touchdown plunge by fullback Siaosi Tultavake to tie the score at 21, Serra recovered the ensuing onside kick to quickly get the ball back.

Nine running plays and four minutes later, running back Erich Wilson broke free along the right sideline on a 20-yard touchdown run to give Serra a 28-21 lead.  Wilson was the workhorse, grinding out 30 carries for 148 yards — his one touchdown was ultimately the game-winner.

After a quick three-and-out by the Monte Vista offense, Serra's running game was right back on the field, and salted away the final 6:45 of the game on 13 running plays, culminating in quarterback Andy McAindon's kneel-down on the 18-yard line as time expired.

Lockie was impressive in his debut, completing 21-of-28 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

He found a connection with the Mustangs top two returning wide receivers — seniors McGovern (9 catches, 103 yards) and Turner (7 catches, 68 yards) — but in the end, wasn't able to get one last chance to tie the score late in the fourth quarter.
