Girls Basketball: Scheduling Mixup Causes Game Between Monte Vista and Dublin to be Canceled
Only one referee shows up for the non-league game, forcing both teams' final tune-up for the West Coast Jamboree to be nixed.
Basketball referees: Can't live with them, can't play without them.
Because of a scheduling mix-up, only one of two referees showed up for Wednesday night's girls non-league basketball game in Danville between Monte Vista High and Dublin, and the game was canceled.
Mustangs coach Ron Hirschman said the original schedule that came out had the game at Dublin, but that when he "noticed the mistake" in November he notified the Contra Costa Basketball Officials Association and was told that the association had adjusted its schedule.

Something between then and Wednesday night, apparently, was lost in translation.
"Just one of those things," Hirschman said.

The game was scheduled for 6 p.m., and one official showed up at around 6:15. Some 15 minutes later, Hirschman and Dublin coach Mark Wainwright agreed to cancel the game.
"We were able to contact the head of the refs association," Wainwright said. "He got one ref here, but we're not going to play a Monte Vista-Dublin game with one ref. … We would not play at the varsity level with one ref because my kids play like hell and so do his."
"We'd never do one ref," Hirschman agreed.
Monte Vista hasn't played a game since beating Pittsburg on Dec. 15. The Mustangs next game isn't until Monday at 10 a.m. when they open play in the West Coast Jamboree against Bradshaw Christian of Sacramento at Las Positas College in Livermore.
"Good way for us to start," Hirschman said, tongue-in-cheek. "But it's just the way it goes. Playing Dublin, that's a great game for us, good competition and everything. Mark and I have known each other for so long. We're good friends, too.
"I would have loved to play them, and they would have loved to play us because we're competitors."
The Gaels have won two straight games, including a 49-33 victory Tuesday night over Hayward. They'll have to wait until Monday to go for three straight when they face Granite Bay at 11:30 a.m. at Las Positas in the West Coast Jamboree.
"We're playing pretty good ball," Wainwright said. "We had a little bump in the road and we've kind of put that behind us. We had a nice win last night against Hayward. We've had two nice wins. So we'll just practice and kind of tighten things up tomorrow."
