Girls lacrosse: Monte Vista Wins 31st Straight Game, Advances to NCS Semis

Foothill awaits the Mustangs in the semifinals

It has been over a year since the Monte Vista girls lacrosse team has lost a game. Since getting thumped by New York state-power Baldwinsville on April 17 last year, the Mustangs have been perfect.

With its lopsided, 15-6 win against Granada in the North Coast Section quarterfinals on Friday Monte Vista's winning streak hit 31 games.

If it plays the way it did against the Matadors next week, the Mustangs have a good shot at defending the NCS title it won a year ago and push the winning streak to 33 games.

"Just coming off last year, we've been able to keep the fire," Monte Vista's Lauren Goerz said.

The Mustangs outscored Granada 11-0 in the first half, at which point they let their foot off the gas.

"Our team plays really well at a high speed," Goerz said. "We were able to do that early, then worked on our settled attack."

Goerz scored a game-high four goals to up her season total to 57. Paige Southmayd added three to get to 68 on the year.

Monte Vista was without head coach Dearborn David Ramos, who was in a friends wedding on Saturday, but the team was nearly flawless in her absence.

"It really came down to passing and catching," assistant coach Lisa Vogeley said. "Everyone stepped up and played well."

Without a first-round game, the Mustangs got back to basics in practice during the week.

"It was like having a mini preseason," Goerz said. "We fixed all the things that we needed to."

Monte Vista will host Foothill in the semifinals at 7 p.m., on Wednesday. In the last meeting between the teams, Foothill took the Mustangs to overtime before Monte Vista prevailed 14-13.

"We need to control the draws because Foothill is a good team," Goerz said.

The Falcons advanced to the semifinals with an 8-6 win against California on Friday.
