When girls soccer coach Mark Jones addressed his team at halftime, already leading by a goal over undefeated St. Ignatius-San Francisco, he simply asked for one thing: a second goal.
His team got the message loud and clear.
San Ramon's Alexis Vandevanter lofted a ball at the net, but the St. Ignatius goalie's attempt to punch the ball away wasn't successful as the ball landed in the back of the net for the Wolves second goal. The Wolves went on to beat St. Ignatius (4-1-1) 2-0 in the opening game of the Ninth Annual Tri-Valley Classic at the in Danville on Monday.
"St. Ignatius is a tough team," Jones said. "We are very happy to start the tournament with a win."
The Wolves (5-0-1) would get the scoring started in the first half when Amanda Davis took a corner kick from Morgan Idso and blasted a ball off three defenders as the ball eventually found the goal for an early 1-0 lead.
"In any match, scoring the early goal is a big advantage, and we did that today," Jones said. "The wind helped us a lot in the first half, we knew that we could keep the ball low and play to our strengths."
The Wolves dominated much of the game with their speed on defense, and their ability to find the openings on their runs down the sidelines.
"That team over there has a lot of really good players, and they made us compete today," Jones said of the Central Coast Section power.
The Wolves will play host to Westview-San Diego on Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. at the Mustang Soccer Complex.
"This tournament is really a pretty cool thing because we get to showcase what we got with some of the best teams across the country," Jones said of the tournament. "We have teams here from Florida and down in Los Angeles. These are teams we don't ever get to play so it's nice to have them here."
With the win, the Wolves stay unbeaten on the young season.
