Happening this Saturday: Lazarex Cancer Foundation Virtual 5.44K

The annual event raises funds to help cancer patients get to clinical trial sites

Boost your spirits and help others by doing something you love! Run, walk, bike, swim, dance or take part in any other workout during the 3rd annual Lazarex Cancer Foundation 5.44K event Saturday, April 25. Cancer didn’t pause for the coronavirus, so Lazarex Cancer Foundation is taking their event to the streets - in your neighborhood - to be compatible with social distancing. Why 5.44K? It represents the average distance a cancer patient travels to a clinical trial site, which is 544 miles.

Founded in Danville, Lazarex Cancer Foundation is a publicly-funded nonprofit organization. They give hope, dignity and life to advanced-stage cancer patients and the medically underserved by helping to identify FDA clinical trial options and assisting with costs associated with travel to trial sites. Too often, cancer patients cannot afford to get to where they need to be, making the ancillary costs associated with participation insurmountable. That’s where Lazarex Cancer Foundation steps in. The foundation reimburses patients from all over the United States for airfare, taxis or rideshares, gas, toll and hotel stays so they can take part in potentially life-saving treatment.

For cancer patients in clinical trials, these past few months have been even more challenging than usual. While some trials could pivot and continue remotely, allowing people to take part from home, other patients have had to revise travel plans, drive rather than fly, or endure extended hotel stays to continue their treatment.
