May 2 is Independent Bookstore Day at Rakestraw
Event is part of a coast-to-coast celebration

Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent.
Indie bookstores, whether dusty and labyrinthine or clean and well-lighted, are not just stores, they are solutions. They hold the key to your love life, your career, and your passions. Walking the aisles of a good bookstore means stumbling upon a novel from India that expands your heart. It’s encountering an art book that changes the direction of your life. It’s the joy of having a perfect stranger steer you toward the perfect book.
In a world of tweets and algorithms and pageless digital downloads, bookstores are not a dying anachronism. They are living, breathing organisms that continue to grow and expand. In fact, there are more of them this year than there were last year. And they are at your service.

Tattoos are super cool. Books are super cool. Temporary tattoos inspired by book illustrations are super, super cool! We have asked several of our favorite illustrators including Tad Hills and Alex Beard for permission to create temporary tattoos of their work. Come in and let one of our crack team of temporary tattoo artists ink you up!
Better on Toast
Regular customers know how much we love food and cookbooks here at Rakestraw Books, so we knew we had to make both part of our celebration of Independent Bookstore Day. Starting at 9 a.m., we will be offering “happiness on a slice of bread” -- tastes drawn from Jill Donenfeld’s new cookbook, Better on Toast.
Bookish Scavenger Hunts
Explore the bookshop in a whole new way with Susan’s special Bookish Scavenger Hunts for Kids and Adults. Whether you’re meeting Fluffy -- our silent yet friendly mascot -- or learning which flowers are presented in Seven Flowers, you are sure to see something new.
Exclusive books and art pieces
Rakestraw Books will be offering a great selection of IBD-2015 books and art pieces while supplies last (no more than three overall and no more than one each). Be sure to shop early for the best selection. Learn more about the items we will be offering by clicking HERE.
We are also participating in the first ever Bay Area Bookstore Passport! You can download the passport here or pick it up at any of the participating bookstores. The passport is good ONLY on May 2nd and every three stamps = a prize box drawing!
