Monte Vista swimming: Boys Team Finishes Second at NCS

Girls team ends up in fifth place

Monte Vista senior Spencer Peugh knew all year Saturday's 200 yard freestyle relay was probably his best chance at claiming a North Coast Section swimming title in his high school career.

"Coming off of last year, (when the Mustangs finished fourth at NCS in the event) we knew this was going to be our race," Peugh said.

Not only did Monte Vista take the race, but nearly set the NCS record with a time of 1:25.09 — eight-hundredths of a second behind Clayton Valley's record-setting team from 2008.

Peugh led off, junior Michael Harris swam second, junior Patrick Scott third and junior Ted Beebe was the anchor. Beebe out-touched Campolindo's Robert Ashby by four-hundredths of a second to secure the victory in school-record time.

"I didn't swim the time I wanted, but the other guys stepped it up," Peugh said. "They've got a good shot to set the NCS record next year."

The Monte Vista boys finished the meet in second place with 210 points, 55 behind Campolindo, which won its sixth-straight title.

"Shooting from sixth (in 2009) to second this year — that's impressive," Monte Vista coach Dow Stewart said.

The boys 200 yard medley relay team of Vince Kaaret, Beebe, Scott and Harris also set the Monte Vista record with a time of 1:35.15, but finished third behind Campolindo and Miramonte.

The Monte Vista girls team finished fifth and had several outstanding performances as well.
