Phone, Email Scams Target Computers and Wallets, Danville Police Say
"These scammers are getting very creative so it is necessary to stay safe and on guard." Chief Steve Simpkins said. Breaking.

DANVILLE, CA — Police officials are alerting residents to two more phone and email scams targeting Danville residents.
Police officials said the callers, who identify themselves as an official with the Internal Revenue Service, tell the intended target they owe taxes. The victim is told they must pay fines or fees to avoid prosecution. The scammer may also reach out to the victim by email. A second, disturbing scam targets the victim’s computer information. Police say the suspect tells the victim they need access to their computer system in order to investigate a computer issue.
“These scammers are getting very creative so it is necessary to stay safe and on guard.” Chief Steve Simpkins said in a statement. “If you didn't request a service, don't give out your information. Just remember that the IRS or law enforcement agencies will not ask you for sensitive information over the phone.”
Earlier this month, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s officials said scammers have called East Bay residents claiming to be from the sheriff’s office to notify the caller that they have missed jury duty. The caller, who identifies themselves as a deputy, asks for money in order to keep the court from issuing an arrest warrant.
Police officials recommend contacting local police with any questions about suspicious calls or emails.
