Photo of the Week: Relay for Life

More than 350 people gathered at Dougherty Valley High in San Ramon for the 24-hour American Cancer Society fundraiser last weekend.

It wasn't as large as those in past years, but the Relay for Life at Dougherty High School last weekend had little trouble raising more than $70,000 for research to find a cure for cancer.

"Cancer never sleeps," that was the motto for the event put on by the American Cancer Society. Two years ago, the local relay drew close to 500 people. But a soft economy makes it tough to keep up the numbers when it comes to fundraising, organizers said.

"All considered, it's been a great turnout," said Juli Fountain, a lead organizer of the Relay for Life of San Ramon. "We're just happy to have people out here, celebrating life."
