NFL All-Pro Maurice Jones-Drew Joins T-Birds

Maurice joins the 59-year-old program both as a Board Member & Head Football Coach.

SRV Thunderbirds today announced the signing of perennial All-Pro NFL football player, De La Salle Graduate and Bay Area native (Richmond, Antioch), Maurice Jones-Drew. While Maurice has had two sons in the program the past few seasons, he has officially stepped into more influential roles within the organization, namely joining the Board of Directors and taking over as Head Football Coach for the Jr. Pee Wee level (ages 9-11).

While the T-Birds have been a premier youth football and cheer program here in the Bay Area since 1959, Maurice’s pedigree and knowledge are going to be interical to the evolution of the organization.

T-Birds VP of Communication, Aaron Silverman, is excited about the addition, “MJD has dynamic football experience, knowledge and has a real talent for working with kids. Having Maurice involved with the T-Birds Organization as a Board Member and Head Coach will help bring our program to the next level. His participation speaks volumes about where we are and where we are going moving forward.”

Tackle football has evolved over the past few decades, moving away from the old school ideals of smash mouth football and more toward a sport where athletes can showcase their skills in a much safer environment. This is another place Maurice can lend his expertise as the NFL is leading the way with new and innovative programs that have an impact down to the youth level.

“As a product of the Diablo Valley Youth Football Conference (DVYFC), I take great pride in being able to return to my roots and have the opportunity to instill lifelong practices and work ethic into the young members of the SRV T-Birds organization. As a coach of the Jr. Pee Wee team and a member of the Board, I will be able to use my experiences, on and off the football field, to expand this organization to greater heights. There is no better feeling than coming back to the league that shaped me into the great man and football player I have become. I intend to ensure that the youth of the T-Birds organization know that education is key, and they are student-athletes; educational studies always come first.”
