Who's Next? Both teams play again on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Grizzlies will visit Livermore and San Ramon Valley will play at Foothill.

The Bottom Line: California still has a shot at winning the EBAL title, and remains in good position to get a high seed in the North Coast Section playoffs, while the Wolves are playing for pride at this point.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Ramon Valley High starting pitcher Halley McDevitt went the distance in her second high school start. Although she was in control for most of the game, the Wolves couldn't find a way to get her the run support she needed.

McDevitt was the tough-luck loser after allowing two runs in nine innings as San Ramon fell 2-1 at California on Thursday.

The Grizzlies scored a run in the first, but McDevitt didn't allow another run until the ninth. The sophomore, making her second varsity start in the circle, scattered eight hits, struck out four and didn't walk a batter until issuing two free passes in the ninth.

After allowing a leadoff double to Mariah Nisbet to start the ninth, McDevitt walked Cassy Mosser and intentionally walked Jessica Catson to load the bases. Kwyn Cooper then hit the first pitch of her at-bat to shallow right-center field to win the game.

McDevitt said she doesn't usually pitch, but is working on preparing herself for more opportunities in the future.

She also couldn't help being a bit nervous.

"I tried to remember to keep up my tempo up and to breathe," she said. "There's always room for improvement."

San Ramon Valley coach Gabe Adami was disappointed his team couldn't get the big hit.

"We didn't get the hits when we should have," Adami said. "There was a couple of instances where we didn't get the hit."

San Ramon (9-11, 4-8 EBAL) stranded 11 runners on bases included two in each of the fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings.

The Wolves tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh. Captain Kylie Day singled to start the seventh and scored scored when Devon Bridges hit a breaking ball up the middle for a single. San Ramon's opportunity to take the lead was for naught when pinch runner Erin Lane was thrown out by Grizzlies center fielder Amy Niedzwecki after Lane tried to score from second on Bridges' single.

The Grizzlies will visit Livermore next and San Ramon Valley plays at Foothill, both on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
