dominated from start to finish Thursday, suffocating Washington on defense and out-swimming the Huskies on its way to counterattack goal after goal.
Now, the Mustangs will move on to the NCS championship game with the chance to cap a perfect season.
Maggie Steffens scored seven goals as Monte Vista blew out Washington, 17-3 on Thursday night. The Mustangs dominated the game, controlling the action on both sides of the pool. They proved too fast in the counterattack for the Huskies to keep up.
"Part of it is speed, part of it is experience," Monte Vista coach Scott Getty said of his team's counterattack. "It's all about communication. We know where everyone is going to be."
In the first quarter, Steffens scored more goals than Washington would score in the entire game, as she found the net for the Mustangs' first four scores. Tori Bidwell added three goals for Monte Vista, and Katie Tomalenas netted two. Jessica Laurence, Erin Livingston and Taylor French each scored once.
But the Mustangs' were most dominant on defense.
"Defense is our first priority," Getty said. "It triggers everything we do."
Saturday, they'll face their biggest rival for the section championship.
"To play San Ramon Valley with the championship on the line, you couldn't ask for anything more," said Getty.
