Danville Huntington Learning Center Celebrates Inaugural TeenTober

Danville, CA, 10/15/2019 - This October, the Huntington Learning Center of Danville will celebrate the all-new event established by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), TeenTober. TeenTober replaces YALSA's previous Teen Read Week and Teen Tech Week celebrations, giving libraries the flexibility to design a celebration that fits their community best. TeenTober runs during the month of October and celebrates teens, promoting year-round teen services and the innovative ways those services help teens learn new skills and fuel their passions in and outside the library. Irum Zaidi of the Danville Huntington Learning Center says that YALSA's new event fits well in today's digital landscape. "Today's teens rely on a wide range of information resources to augment their learning," says Zaidi. "Libraries offer books, of course, but they also offer spaces where teens can collaborate and learn with other students. They are gateways of information, providing all kinds of digital and print resources. We are educating students in a time when literacy means much more than reading ability." Zaidi adds that libraries help children grow into readers and digital citizens. "TeenTober is certain to become an important celebration for Huntington as we promote both literacy and digital literacy as skills that students need for lifelong success." Zaidi offers several tips on how students today can take advantage of the library's many offerings:

• For new reading material – The most obvious thing for which libraries are great is fueling a teen’s reading habit. Use the library to access fiction and nonfiction books (or new genres of interest), magazines, past newspaper issues and other reading material. Parents should also encourage their teens to explore the library’s books in electronic or audio format.

• For multimedia materials – Teens can access movies and TV via DVD or streaming services like hoopla or Kanopy at the library.

• For help with research – Parents must remind their teens that librarians are a wealth of knowledge and information. They are expert researchers and can help them with anything from doing a research project to delving into a topic of interest.

• For access to tech tools families do not have at home – Libraries have printers, scanners, and sometimes even laptops for loan, but many offer lots of other tools and services. Think technology spaces like recording studios or digitization stations for converting old media to digital formats.

• For fun gadgets – Virtual reality headsets. Video cameras. Drone cameras. Portable GPS devices. Google Home or Echo Dots so teens can try before they buy. Parents and teens can check out their local library’s available tech for checkout.

• For career research – Teens who are uncertain about a field of study or career path might find that the library offers helpful resources (books and multimedia) to guide their exploration. Classes or workshops for college-bound teens might also be available.
