Youth sports: SRV Stompers 12U C Team Wins Tournament in San Diego

The San Ramon Valley Stompers Fastpitch Softball 12U C team won the championship in the Cal State Games in San Diego during the weekend of July 9 - 11.

Guided by Coaches Greg Sharkey and Mike Wickman the Stompers went 5-1 in the tournament led by pitcher Bailey Harrison. Catcher Brooke Stevens hit a three-run game-winning triple in the semifinals against the Burlingame Flames.  Carly Re and Maddy Morgan both hit home runs and Lianne Cavestany, Monika Havey, Kimberly and Kristina Pagano and Taylor Wickman all hit well. The Stompers continued in the winners' bracket undefeated up to the championship game against Arcadia All-Stars.  SRV garnered its title in a double-elimination round against Arcadia, winning by eight runs.

The Stompers qualified for the Cal State Games in pool play tournaments leading up to the Cal State Games, which they qualified for at the NorCal championship in Sunnyvale.

"It was definitely a team effort," coach Greg Sharkey said. "The girls got along really well and there were definitely team victories throughout the season where everyone contributed. That was nice to see."  

The Cal State Games are an equivalent to the Junior Olympics on the state level, with various sports teams qualifying from all over the west competing in various events around the city.  The California State Games is the official tournament for the Western Nationals American Softball Association's (ASA) "C" level.
