Kings County officials to ship millions through Davis for affordable housing repairs (abridged.org) β Davis renters at Twin Pines, Tremont Green, and Moore Village could soon see major upgrades, as the City Council approved joining a state finance authority to unlock up to $15 million in repair funding. The taxβexempt bond deal brings new roofs, HVAC, plumbing, and interiors without any direct city money or financial obligation for Davis taxpayers.

At least 1 dead in Yolo County crash; road closures in place (kcra.com) β A deadly crash Wednesday night has shut down Russell Boulevard just west of Davis, affecting a key route many locals use daily. At least one person was killed near County Road 97D, and authorities are still on scene investigating, so drivers should avoid the area and watch for updates on when the road will reopen.

Nominations Open for Environmental Recognition Awards (independentvoice.com) β Davis residents, businesses, schools, and nonprofits can now nominate local environmental standouts for the City's 2026 Environmental Recognition Awards, open through Jan. 31, 2027. New this year is an online, yearβround application, with honorees celebrated at a City Council ceremony in April and a special legacy award recognizing longβterm environmental contributions in Davis.

UC Davis offers free breast cancer screenings as cases on the rise in women under 40 (cbsnews.com) β Free mammogram screenings are being offered at the UC Davis campus this month, with no insurance required and patients welcome from any clinic. Held at the Lawrence Ellison Ambulatory Care Center on October 10, 11, 17, and 18, the program emphasizes early detection, especially for women under 40, and shares one survivor's story to encourage regular self-exams and screenings.

New framework developed for moving endangered species to safer locations (phys.org) β UC Davis researchers helped lead a new framework to guide when endangered species should be moved outside their historic ranges to survive climate and habitat threats. Working with partners across the Pacific, the team emphasized real community engagement and cultural values, giving conservation managers a more transparent, inclusive tool for making high-stakes decisions under uncertainty.
