Arrests Made In Pacific Classic DUI Crackdown

As the race was held in Del Mar, DUI enforcement patrols were conducted in Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — During and after the TVG Pacific Classic horse race Saturday at the Del Mar racetrack, deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and law enforcement officers from the National City and UC San Diego police departments and California Highway Patrol were conducting DUI enforcement patrols in the North County cities of Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas.

From 4 p.m. Saturday until midnight, the "Zero Tolerance" DUI saturation patrols targeted "those who still don’t heed the message to designate a sober driver before their celebrations begins," said sheriff's Sgt. David Cheever.

Eight teams of deputies and officers conducted 111 traffic stops, Cheever said, which led to the evaluations of 27 people suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Two people were ultimately arrested on suspicion of DUI, while one person was arrested for being drunk in public.

Another 18 drivers were cited for traffic violations and one vehicle was towed, according to Cheever.

Funding for the DUI enforcement patrols was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
