Horse Trainer Suspended for Testosterone Levels in Horses

Trainer Carla Gaines was suspended for 30 days and fined $2,500 by the California Horse Racing Board.

A Southern California horse trainer is not a little luckier this season at the Del Mar Racetrack. Carla Gaines was suspended and fined after two of her starter horses—A Little Luckier and Winding Way— tested in excess of the permitted level of testosterone, according to the Daily Racing Forum. Her horses will not be able to race the month of August at Del Mar and the season ends Sept. 4.
The publication reported that the California Racing Board reached this decision at its July 18 meeting. The suspense starts August 1 and both horses are disqualified from prize money won in races at Betfair Hollywood Park on July 14, 2002 ($10,000) and July 21, 2012 ($42,600). The winnings will be redistributed, according to the paper.

Gaines said she plans to appeal the decision, according to the Daily Racing Forum.
