La Jolla Playhouse to Host Benefit Production on Behalf of The Children’s School

The Children’s School is proud to announce a partnership with LifePlay Productions for an original dramatic production on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 6:00 p.m., hosted by the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse. Entitled Maria’s Dream, the show will be a fundraiser to benefit The Maria D’Orio Fund at The Children’s School. The show will be written, directed and produced by La Jolla-based drama and empowerment organization LifePlay Productions and will take place in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre at La Jolla Playhouse.

The Maria D’Orio Fund was established at The Children’s School in 2013 following the untimely death of longtime early childhood educator Maria Rose D’Orio, who taught at The Children’s School for twelve years. The first project funded by The Maria D’Orio Fund has been the creation of a remarkable outdoor education space for four- and five-year-old students. Proceeds from Maria’s Dream will be used to complete this playground and to seed future endeavors of the Fund, which is designed to deepen children’s educational experiences, inspire their wonder and joy of learning, and spread hope throughout the community.

Maria’s Dream will feature performances by twelve LifePlay students who attend The Children’s School, Einstein Academy, St. Didacus School, and San Diego Cooperative Charter School; six of the performers from The Children’s School were students of Maria D’Orio. The show will also include multi-media elements and dramatic monologues delivered by D’Orio’s family members, friends, and colleagues.
