Man, 19, Struck, Killed by Train in Del Mar While Taking Photo: Authorities
BREAKING: Authorities say he was among three people near the tracks who didn't move when the train engineer used a horn and bright lights.

DEL MAR, CA — Authorities said a man who was struck and killed by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train over the weekend in Del Mar was a 19-year-old Poway resident, but his name had not been disclosed by Monday afternoon.
The fatal collision occurred at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, on the bluffs, just north of 13th Street, according to Deputy Marcus Levine of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
A northbound BNSF train was traveling about 40 miles per hour when the engineer saw three people standing near the tracks, Levine stated in a news release.

"One trespasser was utilizing the camera on his mobile device near the tracks before being struck by the train," Levine said. "The engineer activated the warning horn and the bright lighting system on the train, but the pedestrians did not move. The pedestrian was struck by the train and succumbed to his injuries."
His name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

The sheriff's transit enforcement unit was investigating the case. Anyone with information about the collision was asked to call them at 858-565-5200.
