Rip Current Risk Expected through Weekend at Area Beaches

The first significant swell of the season is expected to bring big waves and rip currents to San Diego County's beaches.

DEL MAR, CA - The first significant northwest swell of the season is expected to bring big waves and strong rip currents to San Diego County's beaches Friday evening through early next week.

A National Weather Service beach hazards statement advising of 4- to 6- foot surf with sets to 7 feet, strong rip currents and possible minor tidal overflow will extend from 5 p.m. Friday until Monday evening.

"Highest surf will be on the west facing beaches of San Diego County," according to the weather service. "High tides greater than 6 feet combined with the above average surf will increase the threat of minor tidal overflow at area beaches."
