On December 1, 2021, about 3:00 p.m., deputies at the Vista Detention Facility found a seventy-two-year-old inmate, Gumercindo Aldava Alamos, unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed lifesaving measures until relieved by fire department personnel. Unfortunately, Alamos was pronounced deceased at the facility.

Alamos was booked into custody by the San Diego Sheriff's Department on October 13, 2021, for three counts of 288(a) PC – Lewd and Lascivious Acts on a Child Under 14.
The Homicide Unit responded to investigate the death. Alamos was in a cell by himself. No evidence of foul play was discovered. Alamos' family was notified of his death.

The Medical Examiner's Office will coordinate and schedule the autopsy.
