Three area youth overdosed on the drug Thursday, San Diego police said.

SAN DIEGO, CA: Three Xanax overdoses in the Carmel Valley area prompted San Diego police to issue a public service announcement Friday.
The trio of cases occurred Thursday and involved youth under the age of 18, all of whom are being treated at local hospitals.
Police say they are in the process of tracking down more possible victims, as well as witnesses to the drug's appearance in the area.

In the meantime, police said they wanted the public to be aware of the overdoses in the event others experience medical emergencies. Xanax, a prescription drug used to treat panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression, can be habit forming and should only be used by the person it was prescribed to, police said. It also should not be mixed with alcohol.
Anyone with information was asked to call Northwestern Division Investigations at 858-523-7000.
