60 Freeway Closed From Diesel Spill

A section of the 60 freeway through Pomona was closed Friday for cleanup of a huge diesel fuel spill.

DIAMOND BAR, CA — A collision after 2:30 a.m. Friday morning closed a portion of the Pomona (60) Freeway in for at least four hours Friday. Two tractor trailer trucks collided, spilling nearly 80 gallons of diesel fuel onto the highway, California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred on the eastbound freeway east of Phillips Ranch Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. No one was injured.

A 53-year-old man driving a 2009 Volvo big rig made an unsafe lane change and struck the right front of a 2011 Peterbilt tractor trailer that was driven by a 50-year man, according to the CHP.

The impact caused the left side of the Volvo's fuel tank to rupture and spill diesel fuel onto the roadway. Both truckers drove to the right shoulder of the freeway, with the Volvo continuing to spill fuel onto the highway, officials said.

Authorities determined that about 80 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the Volvo onto the number five lane of the freeway and onto the right shoulder. Also, approximately five to six gallons spilled into a storm drain.
