According to the CHP's preliminary report, a 2009 Toyota Corolla was stopped in the Number 2 lane because of heavy traffic. The Tacoma was approaching the Corolla in the Number 2 lane, and the Audi was behind the Tacoma, whose driver veered to the left for unknown reasons and came into contact with a Lexus, the CHP reported.

"The front of the Tacoma then collided into the rear of the stopped Toyota Corolla," the CHP reported.

The five-vehicle crash, which also involved a big rig, shut down all westbound lanes at Barranca Avenue and triggered a SigAlert declaration at 1:19 a.m., according to the CHP. The lanes were reopened around 5:15 a.m.
