Airbnb Home Suffers Half-Million In Damages

When you rent out a home through airbnb, you expect the house to be there when you return. This Rowland Heights rental went up in smoke.

ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA — A home being rented through Airbnb caught fire Thursday sustained nearly $500,000 in damages, according to reports. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.

The blaze was reported about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 19100 block of Galatina Street, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

"The cause of the fire is unknown and no one was injured," according to a sheriff's department statement.

The county fire department estimated the damage at $490,000.

Airbnb facilitates dwelling rentals on a daily or short-term basis, and a Galatina Street residence was still listed as of this report, though it is not the rental that burned according to Airbnb spokesperson Mattie Zazueta.

“The safety of our community is our number one priority. We immediately contacted our guests and host to offer our full support and we will work closely with local authorities investigating the cause," Zazueta said. "There have been over 200 million guest arrivals on Airbnb and negative incidents are extremely rare.”

If you're looking for short term rentals in the area, a nearby nine-bedroom home was listed as available on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Smoking was listed as allowed on that property.
