DIAMOND BAR, CA — Diamond Bar officials are encouraging property owners to inspect and maintain hillsides and drainage systems before the winter rainy season to help prevent erosion, slope movement and costly property damage.
With El Niño conditions expected to bring heavier winter rainfall, excess water could affect slope stability, particularly when soil becomes saturated, heavier and more likely to shift, according to the city.
Some slopes in Diamond Bar are maintained by homeowners associations or Landscape Assessment Districts. In other areas, individual property owners are responsible for slope maintenance and repairs, including drainage systems.
The city recommends that property owners take several precautions before the rainy season begins, including to not drain directly to slopes, dispose of soil or debris on slopes, or allow water to pond against retaining walls.
Residents were also advised to monitor movement and property condition changes, and discuss slope concerns with their neighbors.
Grading work to address slope problems may require an engineering design and a city permit, the city said.
For questions about slope maintenance, repairs or permit requirements, contact the city's Engineering Division at 909-839-7060. To report overgrown vegetation or slope maintenance violations, contact the Neighborhood Improvement Division at 909-839-7030.
