Baby Boy Surrendered at Glendora Hospital

The newborn is the fifth infant to be surrendered this year.

Another newborn baby was safely surrendered, this time at a Glendora hospital on Monday, according to the Los Angeles County Safe Surrender Program.

The baby boy is in protective custody and will be placed with a family for adoption by the Department of Children and Family Services.

The hospital’s exact location in Glendora was not immediately disclosed.

On July 9, authorities applauded a woman who called ahead to a Pomona hospital to surrender her infant. The woman was unable to keep the child as well, according to officials with Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe’s office.

“It is important that we continue to get word out about the Safe Surrender program so that mothers in desperate situations know there is a better option for their newborn than abandonment,” Knabe said through a written statement. “Thanks to the Safe Surrender program, this baby boy has a second chance at life and hope for a bright future.”

The program allows anyone to surrender an infant no more than three days old - no questions asked - as long as the infant shows no signs of abuse, officials said.

Monday’s surrender is the fifth Safe Surrender in Los Angeles County this year, according to a news release by the Safe Surrender Program. There have been 94 safe surrenders since the program was initiated by County Supervisor Don Knabe and approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 2001.
