International Respect for Chicken Day
Remember when the talk just after Cityhood was a squabble over how many chickens (or roosters) a person could shelter in the backyard before code enforcement showed up?

You may have missed it. Today (May 4th) was "International Respect for Chickens Day".
Cursory research shows that the celebration might be attributed to the Harry Shearer of The Simpson's fame who proclaimed in 2005 that it is appropriate to honor the devotion of mother hens to their chicks.
Now, there are a number of ways to celebrate. Likely, the founders would have approved of going vegetarian. Others would battle whether to celebrate the hen served cold in a Chinese chicken salad or hot, in a white sauce over noodles.

However you celebrate, now that spring is underway, if you don't have your own pet chickens to donate their dung for the dirt — ask for a bag of it at your favorite garden center. Try it. Your garden will like it.
