Capitol Comment for the Week of March 10, 2014

Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) takes up the suspension issue of two California State Senators in his Capitol Comment for March 10, 2014.

Senator Rod Wright voluntarily stepped away from the Senate and accepted a suspension after he was convicted of eight felony counts of perjury and voter fraud. Senator Ron Calderon accepted a similar suspension after he was indicted by a federal grand jury of accepting bribes for supporting legislation.

In response, Senator Huff introduced formal Senate Resolutions 34 and 35, which sought to confirm and codify the suspensions. Passage of both measures would have permanently deprived Democrats of the two-thirds majority they enjoy in the Senate until new elections could be held.

Senate Democrats voted to block both measures and exile them to Senate Rules Committee.

Senator Huff serves as the Senate Republican Leader and represents the 29th Senate District covering portions of Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino Counties. Follow Senator Huff on Twitter @bobhuff99. Visit Senator Huff's website.
