Chaparral Students Go Back to Medieval Times

More than 400 7th graders participated in the fourth annual Medieval Faire.

Visitors to Chaparral Middle School February 1 found themselves in another era, with knights roaming the campus and activities including juggling, basket weaving, country dancing, and the game of Rounders.

More than 400 7th grade students took part in the Medieval Faire, held for the past four years at the culmination of studying about the medieval and renaissance periods. Students were encouraged to either make their own costumes, or rent them from local facilities. Even the district got involved, serving a special Medieval Meal of chicken, corn on the cob, baked potato, an apple, a cookie and milk.

Events held throughout the day touched on different subjects, including catapulting marshmallows for science and math, journal writing for language arts, and physical activities. There was also a falconry presentation.

“Activities like this are a good way for students to learn how all of our disciplines are connected to each other,” said Principal Ron Thibodeaux, who wore king’s battle gear. “The best part is that they are learning while having so much fun.”

The day was coordinated by social studies teacher Gary Imai, history teacher Brad Chapman, and design-based learning teacher Quintin Garcia, with support from all teachers, custodial staff, instructional aides, office staff, food services, and administration.

“The kids didn’t feel like they were being taught today,” Imai said.
