On July 1, 2021 California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis ordered that a statewide election be held to determine whether to recall Governor Gavin Newsom and, if appropriate, elect a successor. This election will be held on September 14, 2021. This election will run like any statewide election in Los Angeles County, in that all registered voters will be mailed a Vote by Mail ballot, there will be hundreds of Ballot Drop Boxes for contactless ballot drop off, and there will be hundreds of in-person Vote Centers available as early as 10 days before Election Day.
How does this election work?
Your ballot will ask two questions that will each be counted separately: ➔ Do you want to recall the governor? ➔ If so, who do you want to replace him? If more than 50% of voters vote YES to recall the governor, the governor will be removed from office and the candidate with the most votes would replace him. If I vote “NO” on recalling the Governor, can I still answer the second question on who should replace him? Yes, if a voter selects “NO” to recall the Governor, they can still vote for a replacement candidate.
When is the election?
The California Gubernatorial Recall Election will be held on September 14, 2021. However, you don’t need to wait for Election Day to make your voice heard. Every registered voter will be issued a Vote by Mail ballot no later than August 16. Keep yourself and our community safe by voting with your Vote by Mail ballot and returning it early!
