DIAMOND BAR AND WALNUT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HONORED BY SIEMENS FOUNDATION AND DISCOVERY EDUCATION IN “SIEMENS WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD CHALLENGE”

ISELIN, NJ, April 22, 2013 — The Siemens Foundation, Discovery Education, the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and the College Board have named four teams of high school students from Diamond Bar High School and one from Walnut High School as finalists in the 2013 Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge. High school students from across the country competed in this year’s Challenge. Under the guidance of a teacher, students were tasked with identifying an environmental issue in their community, and creating a replicable green solution using web-based curriculum tools powered by Discovery Education. The following teams were named finalists for these projects: Diamond Bar High School: • The Bagsters – The team placed collection boxes for hard-to-recycle materials, like potato chip bags, next to trash cans at its school and researched whether or not an awareness campaign on recyclable materials played a factor in whether or not students chose to recycle. • Eco Friends – In an effort to prevent students from throwing trash into recycling bins at its school, the team created special bins with holes at the top to ensure that only bottles could fit. • AQ2 – The team installed water bottle refilling stations at its school to encourage the reuse of bottles over plastic and determined that the school could save an estimated 12,500 plastic bottles every year by reducing overall plastic bottle usage and reliance. • The Steampunk Machiavellians – The team surmised that its school could reduce the amount of energy used for metal production and aluminum processing by persuading its teachers to use fewer staplers. Walnut High School: • Team E.T. – The team developed a plan to implement the use of LEDs into city street lights and concluded that this plan will reduce energy consumption and the probably of mercury poisoning into the air through the burning of coal, and increase environmental benefits. Team E.T. was mentored by Jeri Braviroff. As part of a rigorous three-part judging process, a panel of environmental advocates and science educators selected finalists based on the project’s ability to creatively present a viable solution to some of today’s greatest environmental challenges. Each member of each team will receive a finalist certificate and a Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge green prize pack. Each high school will also receive a congratulatory Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge banner. “These students are the new environmental guardians for our planet and will help advance policy and technological improvements that will help protect the world around us,” said Jeniffer Harper-Taylor, president of the Siemens Foundation. “The ideas we’re seeing from these young students are amazing and impactful. The Siemens Foundation and its partners are proud to honor these students and their mentors for their commitment to environmental change.” The national K-12 challenge is designed to encourage students to tackle environmental issues in their own communities and to seek solutions to those problems. More than 80,000 of today’s youth have participated in the Challenge since its introduction, proving themselves as “Agents of Change” in their own communities. In the past, Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge winners and participants have run grassroots campaigns to warn adults of the damage done when one sits in a car and idles. Others have collected thousands of used batteries to show adults that it’s not good enough to just throw away a potentially toxic everyday household item. As a result of the Challenge, past students have been able to change their schools’ policies, open up their neighborhoods to new ideas and even inspired politicians to craft green legislation on both the state and national level.
