Diamond Bar and Walnut Students Win National Award from Discovery Education and the Siemens Foundation

The Siemens Foundation with Discovery Education announced the winners of their sixth annual, We Can Change the World Challenge.

Two local high schools teams were named finalists: students from Diamond Bar High School in Diamond Bar and students from Walnut high school.

The 2014 challenge was open to all schools across the country from grades K-12. An esteemed panel of environmental advocates, STEM professionals, science teachers and professors selected this year’s winners based on each project’s viable solution to a real world environmental challenge. Projects were also evaluated on their ability to engage the support of the local community and ability to be replicated globally. 

Team Terra Tetrad at Diamond Bar High School in Diamond Bar designed a project to reduce school lunch waste by placing recycling bins in highly populated areas.

Team Grease Lightening at Walnut High School in Walnut’s project assessed the negative aspects of using fluorescent lighting in schools and determined a more beneficial solution was to switch to LED lights, which are more environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient.

Each member of teams will receive a finalist certificate and a Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge green prize pack. Diamond Bar High School will also receive a congratulatory Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge banner.
