Diamond Bar Uses High Household Income as Bait to Attract Businesses

Because the estimated average household income in Diamond Bar is so high, the city uses that as a marketing tool when attempting to bring in new businesses.

After several high profile closings in 2011, it’s been a relief to many in Diamond Bar to see empty storefronts turning into new businesses, like , , and . But how does the city attract new businesses?

According to Greg Gubman, community development director, it’s by touting the people who call Diamond Bar home.

“We try to emphasize the high income level in the community,” he said.

The city reports that the 2009 estimate of the average household income in Diamond Bar was $103,525. 

Another important aspect of bringing business to Diamond Bar is mentioning the amount of traffic in the area.

“We have 300,000 vehicles passing by us on the 57 and 60 freeways,” Gubman said. 

On a monthly basis, about 170 to 200 business licenses are granted, with many renewals. Despite the positive aspects of opening a business in Diamond Bar, it is still fairly difficult to bring in businesses that are not yet represented in the city, and there are many duplicates, like tutoring centers and martial arts studios.

"They don’t generate much synergy in the shopping centers,” Gubman said.

On the Diamond Bar Patch Facebook page, several readers stated that while it’s nice to see new businesses come into town, they aren’t quite satisfied.

“I’m happy with the job creations, but more would be better,” said Shannon Thayer.

“How many massage, spa and nail places do we need?” asked Nadine Rubalcaba. “I don’t think business is rebounding yet.”

Gubman understands how important it is for residents to have more shopping options in town - as he said, “You can’t buy a suit in Diamond Bar” - and said the city is working on it.  

“We would like to see a better diversity of businesses,” he said.
