Walnut-Diamond Bar Sheriff's Station Captain Gets Promoted

Capt. Dave Halm, who oversees operations at the Valley Boulevard station, has been promoted to commander over the region that includes Diamond Bar and Walnut.

Capt. Dave Halm, who oversees operations at the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff's Station, has been promoted.

The 30-year Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department veteran will be leaving his local post to become commander of a region that includes Diamond Bar and Walnut.

On April 16, the Diamond Bar City Council presented Halm with a city tile in appreciation of his service. The Walnut City Council Wednesday night honored Halm as well.

Then Mayor Mary Su said Halm's leadership is a large part of the reason why Walnut has been named one of the safest cities.

"Capt. Halm is a person who has passion for you, for me, for our families, and our community," Su said.  "You will be missed because you have worked so well and you take care of the city council and all of the city residents."

Then Mayor Pro Tem Tom King, a retired Los Angeles Police Department detective, teased Halm about working for the second best law enforcement agency in California. King said that Halm's success can be measured by how the men and women with the department feel about his leadership.

"You've actually affected your rank and file," King said. "The Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs has consistently rated you as one of the top leaders of the sheriff's department. You've been respected by your rank and file members and that says a lot."

Councilman Eric Ching said during the Dorner search local sheriff's deputies, under Halm's command, did several things behind the scenes that made him feel safer in the city.

Halm started his career with the department in 1983, first assigned to the Inmate Reception Center.  He subsequently worked his way up with assignments in Bellflower, the sheriff's headquarters in Monterey Park, Cerritos, and the sheriff's operations bureau, according to his biography.

He came to the Walnut/Diamond Bar station in mid 2004, assigned as the operations lieutenant, which is second in command. His post included serving Walnut, Diamond Bar, Rowland Heights, and Covina Hills for the last three and a half years before he was promoted to station captain on July 1, 2007.

Halm said although he will leave the local station, his job as commander over this region will allow him to stay connected with the area.

"I get to stand up here and take the credit, but it's actually the policing team that takes care of the business out in the street," Halm said. "I leave you in good hands."
