Don't Stress, It's Just a Test

The first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The test, which is being conducted by the Federal Emergency Management System (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will last 45 to 60 seconds, and will interrupt all regularly scheduled television, radio, cable and satellite shows. The test is being held to “keep the nation safe during emergencies and strengthen our resilience against all hazards,” organizers said.

The national Emergency Alert System can be activated by the president if needed to share information to the public during an emergency. FEMA is encouraging the public to use this test as a reminder to be prepared, and have an emergency plan and kit at home and at work.
