The City of Murrieta and Waste Management of the Inland Empire encourage cycling fans to go green during “America’s Greatest Race”

Waste Management of the Inland Empire has teamed up with the City of Murrieta in an effort to make the Amgen Tour of California,  America’s largest and most prestigious professional cycling stage race’s event stop in Murrieta environmentally friendly.

This year’s Amgen Tour will feature 16 teams competing along 750 miles of California’s coastline.  The second stop of the race in Murrieta will kick off with a festival on Sunday, May 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Town Square Park located at 11 Town Square and it is expected to draw thousands of spectators and cycling enthusiasts for a citywide celebration. The festivities will continue on Monday, May 13 as the competitors pedal out of town on the next leg of the race.

“This is a great opportunity to show support for the cyclists and our environment by recycling as much as possible,” said Mark Stackle of Waste Management. “We hope all visitors and residents of Murrieta will help in our own race to create a more sustainable environment.”

Waste Management is committed to encourage recycling and make it easy and convenient for spectators to recycle. The company will provide all of the trash and recycling services for the event and will station 10 solar compactors throughout the event site. Powered by the sun, these eco-friendly compactors compress the contents, allowing the units to gain capacity, so they don’t have to be emptied as often. Fewer collections mean cost-savings for labor, fuel and maintenance and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

“We take great pride in keeping Murrieta green and beautiful,” said Murrieta Mayor Rick Gibbs. “With the Amgen Tour being such a popular attraction, attendees can keep our city clean by recycling and being environmentally conscious.”
