Informed Students Make for Successful Adults

by Senator Bob Huff

The best decision is an informed decision. When we go to buy anything such as groceries, clothes, tools, and especially big ticket items like the family car, we do our best to make sure our dollars are going to get us the best value.

The same idea follows with going to college, which for most students and their families is one of the single biggest money outlays of their entire life.

So it only makes sense that we, as a state provide information students can use to make informed decisions about where they’ll go to college, and what field of study they wish to pursue. That’s why I authored SB 1022, which will serve the needs of students and their families by requiring that California’s public colleges and universities provide real-world information on the job-placement rates of their graduates. Information how average salaries broken down by their degree programs, will also be published.

I’m pleased that the governor signed my legislation and agrees with the contention that California students deserve to know what their college degrees are worth. By giving them this information, we help guide key career decisions.

Before committing themselves to a course of study and to the mountain of bills that comes with going to college, students will get the information they need so they can have confidence they’ll be able to pay off their student debt and still have enough money left over to get their own lives underway.

Informed students make for successful adults. Nobody has time or money to waste on a college degree that leads to nothing more than broken dreams and years of paying off wasted student loans.
