Local Football Teams Meet Mixed Results; High School Teams open League Play

Mt. SAC bounces back from loss, Walnut Bar, Walnut falls in league openers

The local football teams met mixed results as the Mt. SAC mounties notched another huge victory, while both Diamond Bar and Walnut High Schools fell in their respective league openers Friday evening.

One week removed from being upset by Long Beach City College, the Mounties came back with a vengeance, easily dispatching of visiting Grossmont College 52-7 Saturday evening.

Justin Alo went an efficient 8 for 14 for 155 yards and two touchdowns, while Omaris Tolbert ran for 213 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns.

Mt SAC opened the game quickly, scoring 14 quick points in its first two possessions. Tolbert scored the first of his two scoring runs, a six yarder. Aaren Vaughn then followed with a 31-yard run on the very next series.

The Mounties then scored three more times to take a commanding 31-0 lead into the half. Following an Alberto Villareal 21-yard field goal, Alo threw scoring passes to Antone Anderson and Riian Simpson for 52 yards and 31 yards, respectively.

Grossmont (2-4) avoided the shutout when Thomas Mc Donald scored on a four-yard run with less than 9:33 remaining in the third quarter.

WEST COVINA RUNS PAST WALNUT, 42-0

The West Covina Bulldogs scored 21 points in the first quarter enroute to a 42-0 victory over the host Walnut Mustangs in the Hacienda League opener for both teams Friday evening.

Isaiah Love scored twice in the opening stanza, a 30 yard run in the game’s opening drive, and then an 80-yard run to close the first quarter.

Henry Martinez added three more scores, including a 55 yard punt return and was on the receiving end of a 45-yard scoring pass.

SOUTH HILLS UPSET DIAMOND BAR 42-14 IN PALOMARES LEAGUE OPENER

The Huskies took advantage of four Brahma miscues enroute to the upset in the Palomares League opener for both teams.

Jessie Garcia ran for 212 yards on 12 carries and three scoring runs of 20, 20, and 18 yards respectively.

Diamond Bar tried to change things up and put running back Antonio “noodles” Hull at quarterback but that turned out to be unsuccessful. Hull finished with 212 yards on nine carries and scored both of the Brahmas’ touchdowns.
