Man Amputates Arms in West Covina Home Depot

The unnamed used several small hand saws to cut off both arms at the Azusa Avenue store.

A man went into a Home Depot in West Covina today and used saws to cut off his arms.

Police were notified of what had happened at the store at 2220 S. Azusa Ave. at 12:46 p.m., said Rudy Lopez of the West Covina Police Department.

An off-duty paramedic who had been shopping nearby when the man grabbed several small hand saws used rags and twine to create a makeshift tourniquets, but it was not clear what his condition was, Lopez said.

If the man lives, it will be because of the paramedic's actions, Lopez said.

The man was unconscious when he was found in a pool of blood. Other shoppers were stunned.

"He didn't make any statements why or who he was," Lopez said.     

The man did not have identification and had slipped into unconsciousness when authorities arrived.
