Middle Schoolers Win at MATHCOUNTS Competition
Chaparral and South Pointe Middle Schools participated in the MATHCOUNTS East San Gabriel Valley Chapter competition February 25.

Both Chaparral Middle School and South Pointe Middle School had strong showings in the MATHCOUNTS East San Gabriel Valley Chapter competition February 25.
Taking place at Cal Poly Pomona, 24 teams participated in the event, which is part of a national program designed to challenge and promote interest in math and science for middle schoolers.
Chaparral Middle School won 4th place, and seventh grade student Benjamin Chen garnered the highest individual score out of all competitors, for the second year in a row. This time, he achieved a perfect score, and will be moving onto the California State Competition at UC Irvine this Saturday.

Students on the Chaparral team are Benjamin Chen, Kathy Tong, William Dai, and Jonathan Sun. Individual competitors are Yunxuan Li, Lauren Hyun, Justin Chuang, Eric Chen, Michelle Yi, and William He. Chaparral advisors are teachers Kit Lee and Jim Chung.
South Pointe Middle School took 6th place, with Alex Xie winning 16th place in the individual competition. Team members are Peyrin Kao, Leslie Sim, Alex Xie, and Jimmy Zheng. Individual competitors are Irene Chang, Jonathan Kuo, Sabrina Tseng, and Henry Wang, with alternates Sue Park and Aileen Han. The team’s coaches are teachers Gary Dresser, Annie Kim, and Deanna Moreno.
