Pomona Unified, Harvey Mudd College to Host 2nd Annual 'PUSD Does Science' Workshops

In preparation for the Pomona Unified School District Science Fair in February and the Los Angeles County Science Fair that follows in March, PUSD, in conjunction with Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, will host “PUSD Does Science,” a series of events, including workshops, mentoring and more, to support and guide students and families through the science and engineering fair process.

The first of four workshops will kick off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Western University of Health Science, 309 E. 2nd St, where the junior scientists will explore ideas, learn how to conduct controlled experiments and how to collect and present data, and parents can learn how to help along the way.

“These workshops are a great way to provide students with guidance, valuable information and the resources they need to be competitive at these fairs,” said Superintendent Richard Martinez. “I encourage Pomona’s youth to sign up, get advice from the experts and be inspired to achieve their goals.”

The workshops are a result of the Pomona Youth and Family Master Plan and its Promoting Academic Achievement Task Force, which aims to partner with local organizations, including Western University and Harvey Mudd, to provide stimulating scientific activities to Pomona students.

Other “PUSD Does Science” workshops will be held at 9 a.m. on Oct. 25 at Lorbeer Middle School, 501 S. Diamond Bar Blvd., Diamond Bar, and 9 a.m. on Nov. 15 at Pomona High School, 475 Bangor St. The last workshop will be held on Feb. 7 at Garey High School, 321 W. Lexington Ave.
