Promoting Performing Arts at OPA
Oxford Prep (OPA) students participated in Disney Performing Arts Music Program.
What makes Oxford Preparatory Academy (OPA) stand out is its dedication to providing a multiple intelligence (M.I.) teaching approach. Since its inception in 2010 by Sue Roche, the school has been successful at using various teaching methodologies and tools to cater to various student learning styles. Additionally, OPA provides before and after school activities to encourage children to pursue their interests and encourage learning.
Music is an integral part of OPA’s M.I. program. The school offers choir (led by Mario Raven) and band (led by Julius Lopez and Tizoc Ceballos of OPA Mission Viejo campus). Students from OPA’s Chino, Mission Viejo, and Oceanside campus had the option of participating in a Performing Arts Workshop offered by Disney Entertainment.
On April 4th, students gained backstage access at Disneyland. The program was hosted by a highly experienced musician. The interactive program gave them insight on how Disney Imagineers work particularly about music development. They learned about basic music theory and how music can powerfully impact a movie or theme park attraction. OPA Champions had the opportunity to try different instruments - many of which were new to them - to create music appropriate for movie/attraction theme. Students had the opportunity to work in groups and create their own music.

After the workshop, James Beck and Calvin Paras compared notes about the program. James said “I really learned so much from the program. I felt like I was a music composer in there.”
Mr. Tizoc Ceballos, OPA’s Band Director for So. Orange County, arranged both the November 2014 and April 2015 workshops. Moreover, Mr. Ceballos explored different programs and competitions for students to participate in. He made it possible for OPA to make its parade debut at Dana Point Festival of Whales (March 2015) and Anaheim Halloween Parade (October 2014).
