Second Baby is Surrendered to Authorities

For the second time this week and the fourth time this year in Los Angeles County, a newborn was dropped off at a hospital under the Safe Surrender program, authorities reported today.

The baby girl was surrendered by her mother at a hospital in Lancaster on Monday, according to Supervisor Don Knabe, who said another newborn was left at a hospital in Pomona that day.

"Thanks to the Safe Surrender program, these baby girls have a second chance at life and hope for bright futures," Knabe said. "I'm thankful that these mothers decided to surrender their babies, rather than put them in a harmful situation."

Ninety-three children have been surrendered since Knabe initiated the program 10 years ago.

An infant can be surrendered at a hospital or fire station by a parent or guardian within three days of birth without repercussions as long as the baby shows no sign of abuse.
