Secretary of State, Sen. Connie M. Leyva to Discuss Civic Engagement with Pomona Students

Secretary of State Alex Padilla will host as many as 300 Pomona Unified high school seniors to discuss civic engagement.

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and Senator Connie M. Leyva will host as many as 300 Pomona Unified high school seniors to discuss the importance of civic engagement and how the right to vote is the essence of democracy. The event will offer students who are eligible the opportunity to register to vote.

Associated Student Body presidents from the high schools will have an opportunity to meet with Secretary Padilla and Senator Leyva prior to the event, at 8 a.m.

WHEN: 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18

WHERE: Village Academy High School Conference Center, 1444 E. Holt Ave., Pomona

DETAILS: The event is being organized in conjunction with Pomona Unified’s Service Learning Program, which supports and encourages students and teachers to engage in community service learning projects. Service learning is an instructional strategy in which community service opportunities are integrated into the curriculum, with the goal of enhancing the core curriculum and helping students meet academic standards and develop a sense of civic responsibility. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla was sworn in on Jan. 5, 2015. In his position, Padilla is committed to modernizing the office, increasing voter registration and participation and strengthening voting rights.
