Sharing Reading with Family at the LA Times Festival of Books

A recent family outing included a drive into LA and attending a book festival for the very first time.

We took the kids to the 16th annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.  It was held April 30 - May 1 on the USC campus.  Some of the events are panels with authors discussing a common subject, storytelling and performances for children.

We packed a picnic to enjoy once we arrived on the grounds, and the weather did not disappoint.  It was a perfectly sunny weekend, and a great time to be out and about as first-timers at the Festival.

I have to admit that the drive on the 101 was a bit rough.  It was very congested as we approached the campus, but once we parked, it was surprisingly easy to maneuver around the grounds – even with our double stroller.

At the Festival the children enjoyed readings by various authors and watching books come to life with music and fun demonstrations.

On Saturday some of the highlights on the Children’s stage included Jamie Lee Curtis reading from her ninth picture book and the adorable Mallory Lewis and Lamb Chop

Sunday, we enjoyed listening to bluegrass by The Okee Dokee Brothers and having a book reading set to music by Melodee Strong.  They even gave out free Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream.

Overall it was a fun, energetic, and free way to enjoy the pleasure of reading and books with the whole family.
