Southland Bakes in Triple-Digit Heat Wave

Brace yourself, the heat is going to stay with us all week and may get worse.

The scorching heat wave that has baked the southland is expected to intensify this week, hitting temperatures of at least 101 degrees in Diamond Bar through the week and into Saturday.

A strong high pressure system over the southwestern part of the country combined with a weak onshore flow is driving up temperatures, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued an excessive heat watch that runs from this afternoon into Friday night.

Weather service officials predict Thursday, Friday and Saturday will hover at 101 and above. Sunday was expected to cool to 99 degrees and it was unknown how much we would feel it. But the temperatures were expected to lower.

The coastal beach cities will offer some reprieve from the heat with temperatures in the 70s.

In the Angeles National Forest, rangers raised the fire danger level to very high Monday, because of the high temperatures and dried-out brush. However campfires are still permitted in developed campgrounds, and camp stoves are allowed in the backcountry.

Thunderstorms, possible through Friday, also could trigger wildfires caused by lightning strikes.

Authorities advise residents to avoid going out if possible. Stay indoors. If the heat makes it impossible to stay in your home, they recommend visiting a location with air conditioners. There are cooling centers, as well, including Diamond Bar's new library at 21800 Copley Drive or the Walnut Library at 21155 La Puente Road.

The weather service offers the following safety tips during this summer heat wave:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity as much as possible.
  • Keep hydrated with plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing,
  • Shield yourself from the sun with a hat.
  • Apply sunscreen to avoid sunburn.
  • Take advantage of air conditioning and shade.
  • Never leave pets and children in enclosed vehicles, even briefly.
