Special Mentors Coming to Castle Rock Elementary

Ten football players from Diamond Bar High School will mentor and tutor students.

Ten Diamond Bar High School football players are going back to elementary school to serve as tutors, mentors and friends.

The students are taking part in the Creating Honorable Aspiring Mentors with Purpose (C.H.A.M.P.) program at Castle Rock Elementary School. The idea came from DBHS’ head football coach, Ryan Maine, who is a Castle Rock alum.

“I believe this will really help develop their character,” he said.

The players will visit Castle Rock once a week to read, tutor, mentor and just hang out with select students.

“I can’t wait to see the smiles on our kids’ faces when they meet and develop friendships with these caring guys,” said Castle Rock Principal Carol Sullivan.

The athletes taking part in the program were trained by fifth grade teacher Steve Thayer.

“To this day, Mr. Thayer was the best teacher I’ve ever had.” Maine said.

Maine added that he participated in this kind of program while in college and it led him to pursue a career in education as well as be a positive influence in the lives of younger men.
